The prostate is a small male gland the size of a walnut that sits at the base of the bladder just in front of the bowel. It surrounds the urethra (the tube that urine passes through from the bladder to the penis) and is part of the male reproductive system. It's function is to provide nutrients to sperm to aid in reproduction.

Prostate cancer is an abnormal growth of cells within the prostate gland. These abnormal or malignant cells grow more rapidly than normal prostate cells.
In Australia, the lifetime risk of being diagnosed with Prostate Cancer is about 1 in 11 men and 3 in a 100 men will die from prostate cancer.
Early detection of Prostate Cancer is considered extremely important because if prostate cancer is diagnosed late and the disease has spread beyond the prostate, treatment can no longer be expected to cure the tumour.
The actual diagnosis of Prostate Cancer is made by way of biopsy, where tissue samples are taken during a procedure called a transrectal ultrasound guided prostate biopsy (TRUS).
There are a wide range of treatment options for Prostate Cancer depending of the stage and grade of the prostate cancer, the patient's age and general health and the individual patient's priorities.
